FBB - I've said before we should call the company belfastwat er not because of the wages dept but because of every other department that has been centralise d there over the last few years. It seems no matter what the work ethic is or what the statistics state anyone outside of the west link must think they are looked on as hicks. Whats that old saying "never keep all your eggs in one basket"!

Eh yea except this time around the TU rep for staff is proof that a little intelligen ce can go a long way. Don't normally agree with our wacky friend below but this time he has a point. Now if Aaron was in the running... ...

Thats a fair point FBB, but staff need to make the right choices when listing their preference s.

Vote for those who will subject themselves to the rigid task of getting the best performanc e for employees, rather than those who may simply wish only to further their careers.

Personally , I prefered candidates with a Trade Union background .

Alliance to seek change in NI Water status
Alliance to seek change in NI Water status

Legisla tion will be introduced in the next Assembly to turn Northern Ireland Water into a self- financing mutual company, the Alliance Party has said.

Par ty leader David Ford said NI Water's current status as a government -owned company was not sustainabl e.

Mutual status would mean there would be no share- holders, with profits plunged back into the company for the benefit of customers.

Mr Ford said bringing NI Water back under control of the Department of Regional Developmen t would "undermine efficiency drives and be a drain on the block grant".

He said that, in contrast, the mutualisat ion of the company would enable investment to replace outdated infrastruc ture and help make it more efficient.

Performance, Procurement And Governance In NI Water
Performanc e, Procuremen t And Governance In NI Water

A damning report on NIWater has sparked fresh calls for Regional Developmen t Minister Conor Murphy to rethink his handling of the crisis-hit company.

The report by the Assembly's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) slammed the mishandlin g and abuse of tender procedures on projects worth a total of £46 million

B ut the PAC also hit out at Mr Murphy's Department of Regional Developmen t (DRD), linking it to a litany of failures, and criticisin g a key official it accused of influencin g an independen t probe of the water company.

PAC chairman Paul Maskey highlighte d the inadequate safeguards in place at NIW and said: "The governance arrangemen ts establishe d by DRD for NI Water represente d the worst of all worlds."

Committe e member John Dallat said the review of NIW had compiled the "most damning report ever produced" in his time on the PAC.

The investigat ion pre-dates the winter crisis that saw thousands of homes left without water supply and ended in the resignatio n of NIW chief executive Laurence MacKenzie. That controvers ial episode is now the subject of a separate investigat ion.

But Mr Dallat said: "The two volumes of this report running to over one thousand pages illustrate s the depth of the work undertaken by the PAC to get to the bottom of several issues which have rocked NI Water to its foundation s."

The report - Performanc e, Procuremen t And Governance In NI Water - is highly critical of the Government -owned company's failure to properly tender projects worth millions, but it also finds failings on the part of the department .

The PAC criticised DRD permanent secretary Paul Priestly, who was suspended pending an investigat ion of his handling of a review into NIW. The review's findings on the mishandlin g of procuremen t led Mr Murphy to sack four board members last year.

Mr Dallat said the independen t review team "comes out of the report very badly" and claimed the impartiali ty of its findings had been undermined .

Unfair redundancy cuts face legal challenge from union
The government 's new scheme for civil service redundancy payments faces a legal challenge from PCS.

The union, which successful ly defeated the previous government ’s attempts to slash the terms available to civil servants, believes it has a strong case on human rights grounds.

This position received a boost last month when an influentia l parliament ary committee suggested an interim measure to cap payments could be in breach of the European Convention on Human Rights.

T he human rights joint committee said the government had failed to make the case for imposing cuts to the civil service redundancy scheme, which governs the terms available to civil servants who are made redundant either compulsori ly or by agreement.

The union argues that because civil servants have accrued a right to certain redundancy terms through their length of service, this is classed as a “possessio n” under human rights legislatio n, and should not be “interfere d with” unless there is an over- riding public interest.

The previous government ’s attempt to impose a new redundancy scheme was struck down by the High Court earlier this year following a successful judicial review taken by the union.

PC S, by far the largest civil service union, is currently consulting its members in a ballot and is recommendi ng a rejection of the government ’s changes because they fail to protect the lowest paid.

PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said: “This should be seen in the context of the government ’s politicall y- motivated cuts to public spending, and represents a shameful and cynical attempt to make it easier and cheaper to sack its own workforce.

“We have always said we are prepared to negotiate to agree a new scheme and we are determined that these unfair cuts will not be imposed on our members. We have successful ly defended our members’ rights in court before and believe we have a very strong case to do so again.”

HASSALOT SNUBS INDUSTRIAL UNIONS?
Well, what a first week for new CEO Trevor Hassalot.
Hitting the ground running, he was playing the Hearts & Minds game by doing the rounds of various depots, you know the thing, visit the troops, say how well they are doing and take a few questions.

Except if the informatio n we have received is true, then what is the point?
After an Industrial had asked a few ackward questions, apparently he was later approached by his level 4, who is supposed to have told him not to ask those types of questiopns again.

Ho t on the heels of that little gem, Industrial Unions turned up for their first meeting with Trev, which had only been confirmed 2 weeks ago, only to find that the meeting was CANCELLED!

Nice start Trev..... yeah, real nice start!
